For all the guitar-based adrenaline-junkies out there, Epiphone offer up a fresh, future-thinking Explorer-style model that’s fully prepped for the horizon. The Extura Prophecy has been specially designed to blend a classic, immediately recognisable body-shape with a contemporary playing comfort that, when compared to its inspiration, grants smooth access to the highest frets. Actually, the Extura is the bridge between the Explorer and Futura – hence the name. The departure from these two classic models comes in the form of the mounted pair of multi-voiced Fishman Fluence humbuckers. Toggle the push-pull tone pot between medium-vintage and high-gain double-coil sound as if it’s nothing, then pop out the volume pot to split the humbuckers in two for single-coil sound without any interruption from 60-cycle hum. Stuff that either the OG Explorer or Futura could only dream of.
The Extura Prophecy: Ergonomics, Tuning & Modern Simplicity
The smoother feel higher up the fretboard is not only down to the light tweaking of the body shape, but the asymmetrical profile of the Slim Taper neck. While this feature seems like modern innovation, it was actually first developed by Gibson guitar builders back in the ’50s and has seen a welcome recent resurgence. More contemporary treats include a set of Grover Rotomatic Locking Tuners that don’t just ensure accurate tuning and fast re-stringing, but combine with a GraphTech NuBone nut and LockTone bridge-and-tailpiece combo, to ensure near unshakable stability and intonation. This elegant mash-up of a guitar has managed to take all the best bits of the Explorer and Futura, then blend them into a tightly finished and defiantly focused tone machine.
