The 21″ Sabian HHX Thin ride is definitely something unique. On one hand, this cymbal sounds beautifully dark and dry, and on the other, shapes a bright and clear response. This has everything to do with the way this ride has been made. A smaller-than average hammer is first used to beat it into shape, and after it’s been given a shave, it gets finished with the HHX hammer pattern to make it as thin as possible. This, combined with the small, raw finished bell completes a cymbal with a super fast attack, while the effect of the heavier, HHX hammering gives it a brooding, complex and lush sound. The initial brightness, meanwhile, is added by the brilliant finish and contrasts with the darker undertones for a truly interesting response that crashes just as well as it rides.
