While Guild have powered up the Starfire I SC with a few welcome upgrades, they’ve still managed to squeeze this luxurious thinline model into their more-than reasonably priced Newark St. Collection. This vintage-styled single-cut semi-acoustic has been fitted with a thinner U-profile neck that feels a touch more supple in terms of playing feel, while the fresh set of HB-2 humbuckers also have a little more bite – the kind of bite you’d expect from antique models built back in the ’50s and ’60s. To back them up, a push/pull coil split has been fitted, adding an extra five tonal profiles to colour the amplified sound, and the mounted Tune-o-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece combine with the new centre-block (that sits under the top of the resonance chamber), to improve the tuning stability and the intonation of this more-than satisfying guitar.
